Documentary filmmaker Jamila Wignot features the life and talent of Alvin Ailey, a renowned African-American dancer and choreographer who dealt with racism and an impoverished childhood and became an internationally recognized luminary in the dance community. Featuring archival interviews with Ailey, the film unfolds the legacy that Ailey established upon creating the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Company, where he pioneered fusions of ballet, modern dance, and jazz with African-American elements to highlight and celebrate their culture.
