Synopsis by Brian Whitener
Tony Ramos' About Media is another great video about the nature of the medium and its commercial applications. Having served eighteen months for draft evasion, Ramos decided to make a video recounting his experience of the Vietnam War era. By happenstance, Ramos is contacted by a local TV news station who wants to do a story on his feelings about President Carter's granting of amnesty for draft evaders. Ramos incorporates his footage of himself being interviewed with the actual news broadcast, and through this reflexive technique, he demonstrates how the nature of television news converts his presence into absence. The video also vilifies the reporter's lack of objectivity. Superbly composed and intelligently edited, this is one of the highlights of 1970s video work.
