Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

The time is World War II, and in a small village in Bengal in northeast India the survival of a young peasant and his wife and child is threatened when a famine strikes, ultimately killing millions. In desperation, the farmer leaves the village to look for work, and while he is gone, his child dies and his wife turns to prostitution in order to survive. On his return, a power-hungry landowner in the village tries to put the farmer on trial so he cannot take his wife back. This time, the farmer and the villagers have been pushed beyond endurance, and they unite to attack the stores owned by the wealthy overlord. With his power base damaged, it is not likely that the landowner can keep the man and his wife separated, or that he will be able to continue in the same dictatorial manner as before.
