Synopsis by Janiss Garza

Alice Dane (Blanche Sweet) is a poor schoolteacher with an ailing father (Spottiswood Aitken), both of them living a small English village. One day she witnesses a fight during which Sir John Turnbull (Wilfred Lucas) throws his opponent over a cliff. To keep her from testifying, Turnbull marries her -- she agrees to this proposal because she needs his money. But life with the cruel Turnbull makes Alice miserable. When, at the urging of his superintendent, he has to go to South Africa and face a Zulu uprising, he forces Alice to go along. At the mines he owns in Africa, Turnbull proves to be even more barbarous, while Alice and the superintendent fall in love. Their romance is made possible when Turnbull is killed in battle. This picture was based on an old melodrama by James Willard.
