Synopsis by Mark Deming

A musician makes an emotional voyage in hopes of bettering himself as an artist in this documentary from filmmaker Visa Koiso-Kanttila. Kalle Koiso-Kanttila is an aspiring classical vocalist who has studied at one of the world's best-respected music schools. However, while Kalle's dream is to become a soloist with professional opera company, his auditions have not been going as well as he'd like. Kalle studies under several veteran vocal coaches who give him similar advice -- that he's unable to emotionally bond with his music, and he has to resolve his family issues dating back to his childhood if he's ever to move forward and fully reveal himself in song. Kalle begins working with Tom Krause, a gifted singing instructor, who helps him tap into the turmoil of his past while tutoring Kalle on an especially demanding piece of music, Schubert's poetic adaptation "Winterreise". A Winter's Journey was screened in competition at the 2007 Hot Docs International Film Festival.
