Synopsis by Ryan Shriver

Husband and wife co-directors Lina and Slava Chaplin examine the possibilities of an Arab-Jewish coupling in their 2001 romantic comedy A Trumpet in the Wadi. Thirty-year-old Huda (Khawlah Hag-Debsy) lives with her Christian-Arab family in the Wafi section of the coastal city of Haifa, Israel and has embraced her Israeli surroundings by immersing herself in its culture. However, her world is turned upside down when an eccentric Russian Jew named Alex (Alexander Senderovich) moves into her apartment building. A diminutive, hairy, and none-too-attractive musician who enjoys practicing his trumpet late into the evening, Alex is instantly smitten with Huda and begins to persistently woo his new neighbor -- who is not totally immune to his quirky charms. Despite both of their family's strong objections, Huda and Alex gradually fall in love with one another as they muddle their way through a new romance and come to terms with their disparate backgrounds.
