Sketch comedy doesn't get much sketchier than this. Yet another moderately amusing Saturday Night Live skit to jump to the big screen, A Night at the Roxbury features two dim-witted L.A. clubgoers (Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan) who hit on anything that moves, not realizing that the women see them as amateur dweebs. SNL's best offshoot characters are those who are blind to essential truths about themselves, and these guys are blind as bats. True to the history of these SNL films, the humor is spotty and second-rate. But also consistent with the late-night variety show, there's a slam dunk or two amongst all the fodder and filler, including several funny movie parodies. Ferrell and Kattan do indeed appear ready for primetime, with promise for their future work as second bananas or parts of larger ensembles. And they almost carry this one, agreeably transplanting their out-of-control dancing and constant head-bouncing, all to the tune of their familiar anthem, "What Is Love" by Haddaway. But it all gets a little tired, and even the game efforts of Kattan, Ferrell, Molly Shannon, and Chazz Palminteri don't raise this above the level of a silly throwaway. It has some amiable moments, but it's a lot closer to It's Pat: The Movie than Wayne's World on SNL's movie depth chart.
