Soviet filmmaker Yuli Karasik made a series of popular science films and documentaries during the 1950s and subsequently directed fictional features through the mid-'80s. Born and raised in Herson, Ukraine, Karasik initially studied at Leningrad's Film Actor School at Lenfilm Studios in 1940, but left when Russia entered WWII. In 1942, he attended a chemical weapons defense school and served in the military on the Caucasian front. Following the war, Karasik graduated from Moscow's VGIK in 1951 after studying film direction under Sergei Gerasimov. Karasik directed his first feature film, Zhdite Pisem/Wait for Letters, in 1960. In addition to directing, Karasik contributes on occasion to screenplays for other directors. He has worked at Mosfilm Studios since 1963.
