Biography by Hans J. Wollstein

A stocky actor from England, Wellington Playter lent his threatening physique to a number of American films in the 1910s and was usually cast as a brutish villain. Playter menaced Grace Darling in the 1916 serial Beatrice Fairfax, Pauline Frederick in The Slave Market (1917), and Mae Marsh in the popular Polly of the Circus (1917). Playter can be seen today in the restored Back to God's Country (1919), in which he plays a ship's captain who terrorizes nature child Helen Shipman.
