A tall, ascetic-looking supporting actor in films from at least 1912, Walter Lewis (real name: Walter Pratt Lewis) had begun his professional life as a salesman. Usually cast in villainous roles, Lewis essayed one of the most despicable of the breed, Simon Legree, in the 1918 screen version of Uncle Tom's Cabin. In his later years, he often played lawmen, sheriffs, and politicians.
