Before becoming a filmmaker, Vitor Gonçalves earned an engineering degree from the Instituto Superior Técnico in 1975. He then attended the Escola de Cinema of the Conservatório Nacional. Following graduation in 1978, Gonçalves found work doing odd jobs behind the scenes, at one point working as a camera assistant. Gonçalves made his feature-film debut in 1986 with Uma Rapariga no Verão/A Girl in Summer which had taken four years to complete. In addition to directing, Gonçalves also occasionally produces films.
