Czech filmmaker Vaclav Gajer entered the film industry in 1943 as a messenger and telephone operator and later moved up to assistant director under such filmmakers as Martin Fric and Jiri Weiss. Gajer made his directorial debut with Krizova Trojka/The Three of Clubs (1948) and went on to specialize in children's films. In addition to directing, Gajer occasionally collaborated on the screenplays of his films. Between 1951 and 1957, Gajer lectured at the prestigious FAMU film school.
