Suzanne Osten is a Swedish film and theater director with a strong committment for bringing feminist issues before her audiences. She became an active participant in student theater while taking classes in literature and art history at the University of Lund. She soon left the institution become the director of one of Sweden's first free theater groups, Frickteatren. In 1971 she went on to the Municipal Theater of Stockholm; a decade later she was appointed Artistic Leader of Unga Klara. It was there that she began directing many of the experimental plays she had written. Many of these plays involved improvisation and elements of the grotesque that stretch the fine line between reality and imagination to its limits. It was these features that she brought to her films. In 1982, she came out with her film debut, Our Life Is Now. Unlike subsequent works, this one, a tribute to her mother, is fairly traditional and stays grounded in reality. For her more surreal 1986 film, The Mozart Brothers, Osten won the 1986 Swedish Film Institute award for best director.
