British makeup artist Roy Ashton beautified and made horrifying the faces of numerous Hammer Film stars during the 1960s. Born and raised in Perth, Australia, Ashton moved to Great Britain at age 23. By the late '30s, he had established himself as a freelance makeup artist. His work can be seen in such films as The Man Who Lived Again (1946), Fire Maidens in Outer Space (1956), and Dunkirk (1958). In 1959, Ashton took over the Hammer Films makeup department from departing artist Phil Leakey. He remained at Hammer through 1966, then returned to freelance work. He did, however, continue to work on the occasional Hammer film. Ashton also worked for Disney and other major studios.
