Biography by AllMovie

Between the early 1960s and 1985, American producer Robert Chartoff and his partner Irwin Winkler produced commercially successful films such as They Shoot Horses Don't They (1969) and The Right Stuff (1983). After '85, they went their separate ways. With Winkler and by himself, Chartoff produced seven films in the Rocky series; he and Winkler won an Academy Award for Best Picture for the first film. After Rocky Balboa opened in 2006, he branched out a bit more into producing other films. He paired up with director Julie Taymor to produce a pair of Shakespeare adaptations, The Tempest in 2010 (which reimagined the lead Prospero into a female character, played by Helen Mirren) and A Midsummer Night's Dream in 2014. He also re-teamed with Winkler on films like The Mechanic (2011) and The Gambler (2014). Chartoff died in 2015, at age 81.
