Leading Danish screen actor/director Robert Dinesen made his film debut as Asta Nielsen's fiancé in the controversial erotic drama Afgrunden (The Abyss) in 1910. By 1911, he was directing and starring as the wayward circus performer in the first screen version of Herman Bang's big-top melodrama De Fire Djævle (Four Devils). He worked intermittently as actor/director for the Great Northern Film Co. -- often opposite Betty Nansen -- and Swedish Palladium, helming such successes as the sensationalistic series Gar el Hama (1911-1914) and Jeftas Datter (1919). Marrying German actress Margaretha Schön, Dinesen moved to Berlin, Germany, where he continued to direct until the advent of sound. He remained in Berlin (and later West Berlin) until shortly before his death.
