Was born in Accra, Gold Coast (now known as Ghana) where his father worked a management consultant.
Made his professional theatre debut as Tim in Noises Off at the Savoy Theatre in 1983.
Auditioned for the role of James Bond in The Living Daylights, but lost out to Timothy Dalton.
Played the titular role in the stage play Alex, based on a cartoon strip by Charles Peattie and Russell Taylor in 2007; presented a ten-part series on Classic FM as the character Alex Masterley, which won a Gold Award at the Sony Radio Academy Awards in 2011.
In 2011, appeared as Charles Condomine alongside his Cold Feet co-star Hermione Norris in the revival of Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit at the Apollo Theatre.
