A former mining engineer, life insurance salesman, and vaudeville performer, Iowa-born Rex Taylor entered motion pictures authoring screenplays for various Paramount companies in 1916. Later in the decade, Taylor supplied comedy scripts for the situation comedy team of Mr. and Mrs. Carter De Haven before signing a long-term contract with Universal. Continuing in the light comedy vein, Taylor scripted for Laura La Plante and Reginald Denny, the studio's reigning farceurs at the time. Leaving Universal at the changeover to sound, Taylor later wrote such typical B-movie fare as the Ellery Queen vehicle The Mandarin Mystery (1937) and, the following year, was one of five credited writers on the serial Dick Tracy Returns.
