First appeared on screen in her father Ram Mukherjee's 1996 picture Biyer Phool as a cameo - made her full debut the following year in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat.
Starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan and her cousin Kajol in Karan Johar's directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), which was her breakthrough and earned her a first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Has won a total of seven Filmfare Awards and is the only person to win both the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards in the same year (2005). In 2006, she became the first person to win both the Critics' Choice Best Actress and the Best Actress awards at the Filmfare Awards (for Black).
