During the 1940s, American animator Pete Burness worked for several animation units in Hollywood, including the Tom and Jerry cartoons from MGM. He joined the newly formed UPA in 1949 and there created the near-sighted, curmudgeonly but good-hearted blow-hard Mister Magoo. Burness won two Academy Awards for best cartoon shorts with "When Magoo Flew" (1953) and "Mister Magoo's Puddle Jumper" (1956). Later Burness began working on television shows such as Rocky and His Friends.
