Cinematographer Gerald Hirschfeld began working as a director of photography in the late 1940s. He left films in the early '50s, but returned to cinematography in the mid-1960s where he gained respect for his versatility and talent. Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein (1974), shot in black and white, is an example of Hirschfeld at his best. Hirschfeld worked through the '80s and retired in the early '90s. He died in 2017, at age 95.
