Independent filmmaker Barbara Hammer has been instrumental in the development of Lesbian Independent Cinema. Her films are a combination of many diverse elements including avant-garde film, the goddess movement, lesbian art, and eroticism. She made over fifty films in a fifteen year period; many of them have won international awards and have been the subject of retrospectives in Berlin and Paris. In addition to filmmaking, Hammer has also taught at several universities and art institutes.
