American writer/director Otis M. Garrett started out as a film editor; among his assignments in this capacity was the above-average melodrama Vampire Bat (1933). From 1937 onward, Garrett was a staff director with Universal's "B"-picture unit. He called the shots on most of the studio's "Crime Club" series, including The Black Doll (1936), Lady in the Morgue (1937) and The Mystery of the White Room (1939). Otis M. Garrett fell ill during production of Universal's Sandy Gets Her Man (1941); the film was completed by Paul Gerard Smith.
