In the 1930s, Gunther von Fritsch became a film editor for MGM because he was not allowed into the cinematographer's union. By 1937, he had become one of the first directors working on the "March of Time" series of newsreels. He joined the service during WWII. After the war, he directed a trio of feature films, including Curse of the Cat People (1945, co-directed with Robert Wise). Later von Fritsch became a noted television director on such series as Flash Gordon and 77 Sunset Strip.
