Biography by AllMovie

As one of Hollywood's most in-demand art directors for years, Robert F. Boyle built a considerable reputation on the basis of his work with two directorial giants, Douglas Sirk and Alfred Hitchcock. Boyle's collaborative relationship with Hitchcock was especially fruitful; he played an instrumental role of shaping the look of such classics as North by Northwest, The Birds (drawing much inspiration from Edvard Munch), and Shadow of a Doubt. Boyle's additional credits included The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming (1966), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982), and The Suspended Step of the Stork (1991), a collaboration with the celebrated Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos. Boyle died of natural causes at age 100 in the summer of 2010.
