French cinematographer Philippe Agostini is among the most highly respected lighting directors in France, distinguished for his dynamic use of black and white film. Agostini began his career as a cameraman's assistant in 1934. During the '40s and '50s he worked with some of his country's greatest directors, including Bresson and Ophüls. In the late 1950s, Agostini became a director, but has never attained as much recognition in that capacity as he did as a cinematographer.
