Gérard Blain played leading roles in French and Italian films. He is best known for playing the gentle hero of Chabrol's Le Beau Serge and The Cousins (both 1958). During his heyday, Blain was heralded as the French equivalent of James Dean. His career waned significantly in the 1960s when he only occasionally appeared in films. During the 1970s Blain directed films noted for their humanistic messages.
