Biography by AllMovie

Hidari is a versatile Japanese actress who has appeared in a variety of films. She has played everything from an innocent, idealistic young girl to a hardened woman struggling to survive in the scorched ruins of postwar Japan. In 1963 she was awarded the prestigious Best Actress Award at the Berlin Film Festival for her work in Kanojo to Kare, a film made by her former husband Susumu Hani. In 1977, Hidari directed her first feature film, Toi Ippon no Michi, which realistically chronicled the travails of working-class women. Such a portrayal of women is historically rare in Japanese film.
