An onscreen presence in her native India from the early 2000s, Jaya Bachchan achieved stardom and lead status with Pradeep Sarkar's Laaga Chunari Mein Daag -- Journey of a Woman (2007). In that film, she plays one of two sisters who migrate from the rural home of their family to a new life in the big city, but run headfirst into a series of complications and personal crises.
