Biography by AllMovie

Victor Herbert wrote Mlle Modiste for this enchanting operetta star, whose rendition of the showstopping "Kiss Me Again" became one of the great hits of the Belle Époque. The daughter of a Viennese opera diva, Scheff had spent three years with the Metropolitan Opera before entering the realm of musical comedy in direct competition with the great Anna Held. Brought to the screen in 1915 by actor/producer Hobart Bosworth, Scheff starred as a society belle incapable of marrying anyone not named Smith in The Pretty Mrs. Smith. The comedy was not the expected success, unfortunately, and she quickly returned to musical comedy and vaudeville.
