Italian actress Marta Abba was the favorite leading actress of renowned playwright Luigi Pirandello. They teamed up in 1925, and she went on to appear in many of his productions at the Rome Arts Theater. She was also his lover until he died in 1936. Pirandello's devotion to Abba was such that he even wrote plays especially for her, most notably As You Desire Me. In 1930, Abba founded her own theatrical company and specialized in staging the works of her lover and other European playwrights. In 1937, she appeared in the film Loyalty of Love.
