Film critic/screenwriter Penelope Gilliatt started out working as a film critic for the London Observer in 1961. Between 1967 and 1979, Gilliatt was one of the film critics for The New Yorker and later wrote two books on French cinema. In 1971, she earned an Oscar nomination and numerous critical accolades for her screenplay Sunday, Bloody Sunday. In addition to film work, Gilliatt also wrote five novels and several collections of short stories.
