Chatterjee is a popular East Indian leading man who was first seen on screen in the '60s and who was starred in the films of noted Indian director Satyajit Ray.

  • Was working as a staff artiste with All India Radio when the legendary Satyajit Ray discovered him.
  • Made his debut in Satyajit's Apur Sansar (1959); played the lead role in 14 Satyajit movies during his entire career.
  • Won the Padma Bhushan, India's third most prestigious civilian award, in 2004.
  • Won his first ever National Film Award for Best Actor for the film Podokkhep (2006).
  • Received India's most prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 2012.
  • Wrote a book The Master and I, which was published in 2014. The book is a recollection of the memories he created with Satyajit Ray, paying tribute to a much revered bond of friendship and film collaboration.
