Stage actor/director Harry A. Pollard inaugurated his film career at the Selig studios in 1912. At first, Pollard concentrated on acting; among his more famous roles was the title character in Uncle Tom's Cabin (1913), for which he donned none-too-convincing blackface makeup. Switching to directing in 1916, he helmed a number of major productions for Universal studios, including the lavish 1927 remake of Uncle Tom's Cabin and the part-talkie Show Boat (1929), which he also produced. His last directorial effort was the sentimental Chic Sale-Jackie Cooper starrer A Feller Needs a Friend (MGM, 1932). Harry A. Pollard was married to popular Universal leading lady Margarita Fischer.
