Cinematographer Alex Phillips spent the bulk of his lengthy career photographing Mexican films. Born in Renfrew, Canada, he started out as a Hollywood bit player before becoming a cameraman in 1919. Phillips moved to Mexico in 1931. Making close to 200 films, Phillips' work gained his adopted country a worldwide reputation for cinematographic excellence. His son, Alex Phillips Jr., also became a lighting director and went on to work in the U.S. and Mexico.
