Distinguished German filmmaker Kurt Maetzig was a key figure in the development of post-WWII East German cinema. Maetzig entered films in 1933 and during the war was an activist against the Nazis. He made his feature-film directorial debut in 1947 with Marriage in the Shadows, a drama that sharply criticized Hitler's mistreatment of Jews.
