Known to Oprah fans simply as Dr. Oz, Mehmet Oz was born in Ohio, though he later grew up in Delaware. After completing undergrad at Harvard, Oz attended medical school at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and The Wharton School, where he got both his M.D. and an MBA. He would go on to become a professor of cardiac surgery at Columbia University, director of the Heart Assist Device Program, a researcher in heart replacement surgery, the founder of the HealthCorps nonprofit, and an author of several books on health and wellness.

Oz has also appeared on numerous TV shows that utilize his expertise as a doctor. In addition to numerous informational programs on the Discovery Health Channel, like Second Opinion with Dr. Oz and You: On a Diet, Oz became a regular guest on the Oprah Winfrey show, appearing several times to dispense information and advice.


  • Was named Turkish American of the Year in 1996, and speaks Turkish fluently.
  • Took time off from medical school to serve in the Turkish army in order to retain his dual citizenship.
  • Has coauthored a number of medical advice books, including Healing from the Heart (1999), which won a Books for a Better America Award, and the bestselling YOU: The Owners Manual (2005).
  • Served as a consultant on heart transplantation for the Denzel Washington medical thriller John Q (2002).
  • Has appeared frequently on daytime talk show Oprah Winfrey; the host returned the favor with an appearance on Oz's limited-run Discovery Health series Second Opinion with Doctor Oz.
  • Named to numerous "best doctor" lists, including New York Magazine's "Best Doctors of the Year," Healthy Living Magazine's "Healers of the Millennium" and Hippocrates Magazine's "Doctors of the Year."
  • Launched his own syndicated talk show, The Dr. Oz Show, in 2009.
