A 1970 graduate of Paris' Institut de Formation Cinematographique, Portuguese filmmaker Luís Galvão Teles spent his early career involved with militant cinema. Teles, José Fonseca e Costa, and Jorge Marecos Duarte teamed up in 1978 to found Filmform. In 1981, Teles stopped directing feature films and began directing advertising films, a career path he pursued until 1991 when he returned to features with Retrato de Familia/Family Portrait. In 1998, Teles received a Golden Globe nomination for his acclaimed drama Elles (1997).
