American cinematographer Lionel Lindon joined the film industry as a teenage lab assistant and was soon promoted to assistant director. In 1930, he began operating a camera and within 13 years had become a director of photography. He went on to shoot many fine films, primarily for Paramount. In 1956, he won an Oscar for his work on Around the World in 80 Days. He began working in television as well as film in the late 1950s and later won an Emmy for photographing Ritual of Evil (1970).
