Started acting at the age of 16, when she joined the Old Vic Youth Theatre.
Attended the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art from the age of 17.
First joined Eastenders in 1991, playing the original Lorraine Salter; returned to the soap in 2006 to play the role of Shirley Carter.
Is credited by Eastenders co-star Kellie Bright as the anchor of the Carter family and the reason the clan is so successful.
Was cleared of racially abusing a London council worker in 2015.
