Judge Jerry Sheindlin wielded his gavel in New York City's criminal courts, and then on Manhattan's Supreme Court, before inheriting the post of People's Court judge from former New York City mayor Ed Koch in 1999. The husband of vociferous celebrity justice Judy Sheindlin (whose own courtroom reality series, Judge Judy, ran at the very same time), Jerry immediately gained a reputation as the gentler and more soft-spoken of the pair. He spent two years on the program, then stepped down in March 2001, replaced in turn by Judge Marilyn Milian.
