After a few seasons of leading-man assignments on stage, John Holland entered films as a utility player in the later 1930s. In 1949, Holland was a semi-regular on the pioneering TV anthology The Armchair Detective. He went on to appear on Broadway in Mary Martin's Peter Pan, then toured extensively in The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. John Holland spent his last active years playing such secondary roles as the butler in My Fair Lady (1964) and a valley farmer in Chinatown (1974).
