- While attending Stanford University, was drafted as a pitcher by the New York Yankees and spent two years playing in their farm system.
- Was first overall pick of the 1983 draft by the Baltimore Colts, for whom he didn't want to play; Elway threatened to play baseball for the Yankees if not traded, so the Colts dealt him to the Denver Broncos.
- The football field at Elway's alma mater, Granada Hills High School, was renamed in his honor in 1998.
- Named MVP in his final game, a Super Bowl XXXIII win over the Atlanta Falcons.
