Cinematographer Joe MacDonald was born to American parents in Mexico City. He joined the film industry in the early 1920s as an assistant cameraman; by the early 1940s he had been promoted to director of photography where he became known for his excellent photography with both black-and-white and color film. He was also equally at home filming indoors or out.
