Jill Craigie became a director of documentaries during the Second World War. Just prior to getting hired on as a helmer by Two Cities Films, she had been working as a scriptwriter who wrote many propaganda documentaries for the British Council. She made two documentaries at the Two Cities studios: Out of Chaos (1944) and The Way We Live (1947). At that time she became quite notorious for her attempts to get her "non-entertainment" films distributed to mainstream theaters, and for her she continued efforts to make films after the war. She formed her own production company, Outlook, in conjunction with producer William MacQuitty, in 1948. Her only feature film, Blue Scar, came out in 1949. She made one last film in 1951, a documentary strongly arguing for equal pay for women, To Be a Woman, before abandoning the craft and returning to screenwriting, this time for the BBC. She also continued to write articles for the London Daily Standard.
