A handsome leading man for the pioneering Lubin company in Philadelphia (1915's The Emerald God, 1916's The Beggar King), Jay Morley later portrayed mostly villains and often in serials and low-budget Westerns. He retired from the screen soon after the changeover to sound to become sheriff of Malibu, only to return in the 1950s, much heftier than before, a comeback probably facilitated by his son, Jay Jr., a costume designer at Universal.
