A jazz vocalist-cum-guitarist whose popular appeal and recognition never measured up to his critical acclaim, Jackie Paris established himself among bop practitioners of the early '40s -- including Charlie "Bird" Parker, with whom he toured, and Dizzy Gillespie -- then recorded only infrequently and attained, at most, an extremely limited cult following. At one point, obscurity so cloaked Paris that a major jazz reference work incorrectly listed him as having died in 1977, though he was still living and occasionally performing at the time. Paris only began to gain reknown in 2005 -- one year after the musician's death -- thanks to the persistent efforts of documentarian Raymond de Felitta, who paid grand homage to the musician with his award-winning documentary 'Tis Autumn: The Search for Jackie Paris (2005).
