Versatile Soviet filmmaker Ivan Pyriev gained an international reputation for his musicals and comedies. Later in his career he was admired for his dramas, many of which were adapted from Dostoyevsky novels. Pyriev was born in Kamen, Russia, and started his career working on-stage for Eisenstein in 1923. From there he worked as an assistant director and screenwriter, becoming a full-fledged director in 1929.
