Soviet director Igor Savchenko is well regarded in his native land for his lavish historical and war epics including Bogdan Khmelnitsky (1941), the biography of a famed Ukrainian warlord. Savchenko started out as a stage director and actor. In 1946, he became an instructor at the State Film Institute in Moscow and guided the early careers of such noted directors as Alexander Alov, Vladimir Naumov, and Marlen Khutsiev.
