A veteran character player from Canada, dignified-looking Herbert Fortier entered films with the Philadelphia-based Lubin company in 1914. Often cast as the heroine's father, doctor, or lawyer, Fortier had an especially meaty role in the 1915 labor vs. capital melodrama City of Failing Light. When nasty factory owner John Gray (Fortier) contracts a serious illness, the factory is taken over by his look-alike brother (also Fortier), who promptly improves the situation not only for the workers but also for John's much put-upon, hard-proven wife (Octavia Handworth). Freelancing after the demise of Lubin in 1916, Fortier saw his fortunes decline and he spent most of the 1920s in programmers, becoming an extra after the changeover to sound.
